What is a Computer

A computer is a device that manipulates data using input devices such as a keyboard and mouse, and output devices such as a monitor or printer. A computer can be used for a variety of tasks, including word processing, spreadsheets and presentations.

Examples of different types of computers include desktops, laptops and tablets.

Laptop and Desktop Computer

Desktops and laptops tend to be more powerful than tablets and are more suitable for heavy duty tasks such as gaming or video editing. Both desktops and laptops are available as all-in-one machines with inbuilt screens or monitors.

Tablets on the other hand tend to be lightweight and portable making them ideal for people who travel a lot. Tablets can also be used for similar tasks to a desktop or laptop but are more limited in their capabilities due to the smaller screen size.

Computers perform four main functions: Processing – turning data such as text, numbers and images into useful information (such as letters or numbers) Storage – storing information so that it can be used later Retrieval – locating stored information and using it in a calculation Output – displaying information to a user in various ways

Key Components of a computer

The key components of a desktop computer include a processor (CPU), memory, motherboard, hard drive and power supply. The CPU is the main processing component that carries out instructions. Memory is used to temporarily store information while it is being processed by the processor. Motherboards are the circuit boards that connect the various components of the computer. Hard drives are used as the main storage medium for information and are typically made from metal or plastic.
